The Typewriter Project (2004)
with Peter Chester
The Typewriter Project explores of the use of text as a medium for creating
an expressive sound composition. Essentially, it is a system that attempts to
create a contextually appropriate soundtrack for the passage of text keyed on a
typewriter. For example, if the user types a passage to convey sadness, sad
music will be played; if the mood of the text shifts to a more cheerful vein
the sound will shift as well. In many cases the resulting compositions will vary
considerably from one user to the next due to the various moods expressed by
the participants. Furthermore, the typed pages serve as a record of each
person's interaction and may also be used as a score to re-create the
composition at a later time.
